At a family gathering I made some Pani Puri for starters. My cousin has an air fryer so we decided to test if the pani puris could cook in the air fryer as I had seen posts about it online. It worked! Here I'll share an easy Pani Puri recipe using a homemade filling but a store bought water mix.

homemade indian pani puri gol gappa recipe tavdawala

Ingredients:

Boiled diced potatoes

Cooked black chickpeas (kala channa from a tin)

Diced red onion

Roasted cumin powder

Red Chilli powder

Salt

Coriander leaves (optional)

Pani Puri Ready Mix (Tavdawala)

Wholewheat Pani Puri Pellets (Falcon store brand)

Method

For the pani puri filling. I mixed together boiled diced potatoes, cooked black chickpeas (from a can), diced red onion, roasted cumin powder, red chilli powder and salt. You can add coriander leaves as well. The amount of ingredients are to your preference. Once mixed set aside for later.

You can buy ready made pani puri water in a variety of flavours. I found this ready mix pack at an Indian store. I added some of the paste from the ready mix into some water and mixed well.

For the Puris I used Wholewheat pani puri pellets which can be fried in oil. I air-fried these in the air fryer which took around 1 minute. I had the temperature set to 180°C on my air-fryer.

Some of the puris did deflate a little whilst in the air-fryer but they were still useable. Now all you have to do is make a hole in the puris with your thumb and fill the puris with the potato filling.

Mix the water, as some of the masala in the ready mix does sit at the bottom, and pour into the puris. You have your pani puris ready to eat in one mouthful. Everything can be made in advance and once you're ready to eat you can make the Pani Puris and enjoy as a snack, starter or meal.
